Barn at Silverstone
2miles from the County Inn of Lancaster
The Barn at Silverstone
Built as part of the original 1000 acres farm, deeded from William Penn (now known as Silverstone Inn & Suites) and first settled in 1751 by the Evans Family, the early 1800's stone bank barn originally served to house the working horses in the lower stables area and store hay and feed on the upper floor to be fed through chutes down to the horses.
The full fieldstone gables have large ventilation slots which shows a mastery of masonry work. All original massive mortise and tenon beam work supports the barn and full slate roof to create a large open space with ventilation which served its use as a tobacco barn during the 1900's.
During restoration, all interior stonework has been repointed, all woodwork and beam systems have been preserved to create a beautiful reclaimed barn that provides climate controlled elegant open spaces for large events.
The lower stables area keeps its character by incorporating the original feeding troughs, chutes and gates into the décor and spills out into the courtyard area where it meets the

Strasburg Rail Road™ is America’s oldest operating railroad with a charter dating back to June 9, 1832. When you visit Strasburg Rail Road, the first thing you can expect is an authentic experience of a real steam railroad. The locomotives and passenger cars, (known as “rolling stock”) are not replicas, and our team members are not reenactors. Strasburg Rail Road has five working steam locomotives and 20 operating passenger cars, including our President’s Car, First Class Parlor Car, First Class Lounge, and our Dining Car. All equipment is restored and maintained on-site in our Mechanical Shop.

Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania
5.7 Miles From the Country Inn of Lancaster
What’s in a name? Actually, quite a bit. We are the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, not the “Pennsylvania Railroad Museum” or some other variation of the name. We are, in no way, a museum exclusively devoted to the Pennsylvania Railroad. We are a museum devoted to telling the rich stories of railroading in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including all its railroads, its support industries and its workers and travelers – past and present.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania was created by an act of the state legislature (1963), with a site selected in Strasburg, Lancaster County (1965). Very gradually, the Museum began acquiring its first locomotives and railroad cars, with the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Historic Collection arriving in Strasburg from Northumberland, PA (1969). The first phase of Museum construction yielded the installation of a 100-foot ex-Reading Company turntable and yard tracks (1970-1971), while the second phase saw the completion of the Museum building (1972-1974). In April 1975, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania opened to the public, the first structure in North America built specifically as a railroad museum.
The non-profit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania was chartered to provide support for education, restoration and fundraising projects (1983). A successful capital fund drive yielded a 45,000-square-foot addition, reminiscent of an arched urban train shed of the late 19th century, to the main exhibit hall (1995). Gradually, the 1915-era “Golden Age of Railroading” Street Scene was completed, with the addition of Steinman Station, a re-created early 20th century passenger depot (1988); Stewart Junction, an interactive railway education center for all ages (2000); and a furnished streetscape of five period building vignettes (2004-2010). To better preserve a growing collection, a state-of-the-art restoration shop was added (1999). The Museum’s font entrance was remodeled, with a new lobby atrium and museum store (2007), and geothermal heating and air-conditioning was installed (2011). Currently, a $4.5 million comprehensive exhibit project is in progress (2018), and a $6 million roundhouse is planned (2018).
Today, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania features a world-class collection of more than 100 historically significant locomotives and railroad cars – made and/or operated in Pennsylvania – as well as a collection of more than a half a million photographic images and documents, and over 17,000 smaller artifacts, including tools, uniforms, tickets, station signage, telegraph and signal equipment, works of art, and many other items used to build and operate railroads serving the Commonwealth. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s mission is to document, preserve and educate the public about the Commonwealth’s rich railroad history, discovering the relevance of railroads in building the nation and the role of today’s railroads in our lives.

meet the farmers
The Cherry Crest property dates back to the early 1700s, when it was owned by the Ferree family, who came to the Pequea Valley from France to escape religious persecution. Though her husband Daniel died before coming to the New World, Marie Ferree settled here with her seven children. The farm and surrounding land was passed down through several Ferree generations before being sold to numerous different families over the years.
Today, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm is family-owned and operated by Jack and Donna Coleman, who moved here from New Jersey with their children in 1987. Though they began as dairy farmers, they currently have beef cows, raise broilers for Tyson, and crop farm over 300 acres. They ventured into the agri-tainment business in 1996 with their first Amazing Maize Maze, “Locomotive Labyrinth.”
Over the years, Cherry Crest has grown from being the “farm with a corn maze” to being a 15-acre adventure farm, with 50+ Farm Fun activities, including the Hay Chute Slide and Straw Bale Racer, Jump Pillow, Farm Tour Wagon Ride, Petting Zoo and Farm Experience Center, Corny’s Ball-cade, and of course the Corn Maze.
Jack and Donna are still very much involved with the daily operation of the farm, and their kids are too! Their oldest daughter Sherri has taken over much of the accounting and financial work at the farm as the Chief Financial Officer, and lives down the road with her husband and family. Their youngest daughter Shelly works as the Chief Operations Officer at the adventure farm, and runs Cherry Crest Meadows with her husband and kids. Their oldest son Jerry lives with his wife and family in New York, where he does crop farming. Jack and Donna have two younger sons, Jared and Dylan, who still live at home. Jared is heavily involved in the shop and on the farm, helping with construction projects and tending the chicken houses. Dylan is quite knowledgeable in the area of digital media, and helps to produce videos for the farm and the maze. Jack and Donna also have nine grandchildren, many of whom work at the farm as well.
In 2019, we celebrated 23 years of growing fun!
